Strike the Ball Better with the Correct Hand Position, Tour Alignment Sticks Drill (Video) - by Pete Styles

Any golfer you speak to from a brand new beginner to the world’s best top professionals, the one thing they always say about their game is they want to find more consistency and the best way for you find consistency is to make sure you’re doing the same things every time, particularly when you’re playing well. And this stems from a good set up position and more importantly a consistently good set up position. So if you can find the right position to start with every time your swing can then mimic the same positions every time to produce the same shots every time.

One thing I think is often overlooked with the set up is the actually the position of the hands. So I’m using my toe sticks here to help me get in a really good position and a consistent position. The first stick on the floor is just simply for my alignment, just help get consistently pointing in the right direction every time. And the second stick here is in the floor sticking out in the angle that I want the shaft to be in the address position. Now I’ve stuck this through a basket simply because I’m on a driving range, I can’t push it right into the floor but if you’re out in the grass you can stick it into the floor and adjust that alternatively like myself flick the basket upside down, put it through one of the slots and that will help you get the right angle.

And the way we determine the right angle is when we’re setting up to the golf ball nicely we’d like the stick to point just above the bet buckle towards the belly bottom should be okay. And then as you set your club up, you’d want to feel that it’s parallel to that line so we’re not having the hands too high near the stick or dropping down too low away from the stick. So you hold it there, you check that it’s nice and parallel and then you go ahead and take your grip. And the shaft of your golf club should point about your belt buckle position. So if that’s in the right position that’s great.

Another really nice way of checking that your hands are in the right position and consistently right is always set the ball directly up underneath the stick and then just check that the shaft line isn’t too far ahead of the cane or isn’t too far behind the cane. It should be nice and consistently underneath it so it’s not too far ahead, not too far behind because that would add or decrease the loft on the swing. So if you can get that good consistent set up position your swing can then mimic the same position over and over again and produce a more consistent ball fly which after all is what we’re all looking for in a golf game.
