Should you have a lob wedge in your bag? Simple answer is yes, no question. I’ve never seen a golfer put a lob wedge in their bag and score worse unless they are really bad at using it. So get a lob wedge in your bag, learn how to use it properly, and it absolutely has to save you some shots. Now the reason why we have lob wedges in our bags is because it has got more loft than a sand wedge, so a modern sand wedge has got about 54 degrees of loft on it, which is okay for majority of shots it will lift the ball over some bunkers and land, and spin it on the green but there will be times and places when the green is very quick, when the green is rolling away from you, when the lie is very tight, when the wind is at your back.

When you are looking at a shot thinking I wish my sand wedge would spin the ball and stop the ball a bit quicker nearer the hole and that is where the lob wedge is useful, its generally got 58 to 60 degrees of loft, some wedges even go to 64, and that is quite severe but if you go for a 58 or 60 degree lob wedge, use it well in your bag, you will save yourself some shots. Now the best way to play your lob wedge is exactly the same way you’d play your sand wedge, play from the center of the stance, keep the hands and body weight nicely into the left leg and just hit down on it, and as you hit down the loft will work really nicely to hit the ball up in the air and put some spin on the ball. One of the biggest mistakes and reasons why a lot of people say they don’t like their lob wedges is that they are actually trying to do the job that the club is designed to do, they are trying to do it themselves so they will be leaning back too much, they will be flicking and scooping and trying to help the ball in the air and that is not really required, your lob wedge will hit the ball high enough, your job is just to deliver it nicely. So get a lob wedge in your bag, get the ball in the center of your feet, get the body weight on the left side and hit down, the lob wedge will hit the ball lovely and high and you won’t believe how much your scores can improve when that ball spins to a stand still next to the flag.
