Why Line Up Putts Using A Line On The Golf Ball (Video) - by Pete Styles

Now if you are a watcher of golf on the television, quite often when you’re watching the world’s best players, you’ll see them lining putts and when the ball is marked they’re continually adjusting the golf ball around, so they’ve got it lined up nicely and they’re adjusting it and tweaking it. Now as long as the ball is marked you’re fine to do that. Now of the things that they’re trying to achieve though, is they’re trying to get the line that they may have drawn on their ball to point exactly where they want to ball to start. And it’s not always directly at the hole because if they got a breaking putt they’ll be aiming this line off centre.

So you could draw a line around the golf ball with a little device called the Mine Me Up; it’s just a little clip that goes on and you draw around it; a couple of dollars doesn’t cost too much, or you could just use the maker’s name, the manufacturer’s branding on the side of the ball. So when you line yourself up your ball is marked of course, you’re lining that up exactly where you want the ball to start off on its roll. Now as you stand up over the top of the ball, that alignment aid gives you a really a good chance of getting your clubface square with it and your body and your feet square with it. One last little check from back here and then you should feel that you’re confident to go ahead and roll the ball down there on exactly the right line. We may be able to pick up on camera, as well that if I can hit this ball nicely rolling end over end you’ll see that line tracking towards the hole. That really works well for the guys on the PGA Tour because they’re playing on beautiful base, smooth putting greens almost like pool tables; not quite the same for me I’m afraid, this putting green had its winter maintenance and it’s very bubbly, but if I line my putter there, I’ve got my line pointing just to the right lip of this hole that’s exactly where I want the ball to be hit I’m going to go ahead and stroke it down that line, and the roll, the ball rolls and end over end towards the hole, bubbles away a little bit and deviates off. But you could tell that as I hit that it started its rolling end over end so I know that I got my stroke online, I’d got the ball lined up in the right position; and if on a smoother green it would have tracked out quite nicely. That’s why you’ll see the pros on the TV bending down moving their ball whether it’s been marked, moving it so it’s nicely lined up, then they take their stroke and they role end over end. They use the line to help them get the ball starting on the right track.
