Mo Martin is a 32 year old LPGA Tour member who last year recorded her first victory on tour. And it just happened to be the Rico British Women’s Open. So not a bad way to open your account. Now, Mo has a very, very good, a very, very consistent golf swing and there is one particular move during her backswing and downswing that a lot of golfers could copy to really, really good effect. And it’s all about getting the club; it’s all about getting the swing on playing.
Now what Mo does very, very well in her backswing, is take the club away nice and wide hinging the wrist upwards until the butt end of the club points down at the target line. So halfway back during the downswing the butt end of the club is pointing down at the target line. The swing continues upwards with a nice full turn, and then during the downswing, the butt end of the club again returns down to the target line, and just before impact, actually points down at the ball. Now this swing shows that Mo Martin’s swing is very much on play and she can deliver a consistent path.
And if she delivers a consistent clubface to the ball, she will also hit consistent shots. Now the way to practice this is you can do a little preset drill. So taking the club away, hinging into that position, and then having the shot. So very, very simply, take it up to that position, hinge, hold, check; and then swing through and hit. And if you can return to those positions again and again and again, you’re going to hit consistent shots.
