What do the marks on my golf clubs tell me? When you're playing golf and you’re learning how to become a better player and how to influence ball flight more, you can get really valuable information if you actually have a look at your club heads and see where the ball is striking the club face. So if you have a look at your club face and you notice that all of your marks are towards the heel or all of the marks are towards the toe this is going to give you valuable information to why the ball is flying the way it does. The sweet spot is the centre of the golf club absolutely in the middle of that club face and that’s the sweet spot; it’s the size of a small coin. And that’s ultimately where you’re looking to hit your golf shots from, from that sweet spot. If you find the sweet spot with your connection you hit a maximum distance with maximum accuracy.

You start to connect away from that sweet spot you’re going to lose distance; you’ll lose about 10% for every quarter inch you are away from that sweet spot and also you’re going to lose accuracy. If you start to impact more on the toes that’s this end of the club you will find that as the club impacts with the ball in this area the toe end of the club slows down because of the impact but nothing is slowing the heel down. So the face will now twist and you will hit the ball to the right. If you notice that your shots are more from the heel again the opposite is true the heel will slow down the toe will accelerate past the heel because nothing is slowing that part of the club down and you will hit the ball left. So that’s explains why you're seeing balls flying left and balls flying right, a lot of information can be gained there. If you notice that your hit marks are from the housel you’d be shanking the ball, so that’s a shot that flies very low and very right almost at right angles. And again it’s because you’re hitting from this part of the club rather than the club face. So work on your address position and maybe have a look at the fact that you’re standing too close or too far away from the ball depending on where you see the strike marks. If you have a look on your woods and you actually see sky marks on those so that would marks that are left on the top of the club there, that would indicate that you're teeing the ball up ball way to high for the club that you’re hitting. So use a smaller tee peg and you should find that you get the strike mark much more out of the middle. So look for that information off your golf clubs, translate it back into what you see ball flight-wise, and then you can adjust the distance that you’re standing from the ball, work on getting the ball more from the middle of the club, you should see much further shots and much straighter ones.
