So how can you avoid hitting fat wedges. Well do you know what a fat wedge is? Well its not like the club is fat, it’s the case of how you strike a ball. So a fat is referring to you coming in and actually hitting the ground first, you know you hit a fat chunky divot you know piece of earth the sort of earth that comes out, that’s when you catch the ground heavy, so you kind of catch that’s what terminology is fat, it’s a heavy golf shot. And one of the biggest factors of doing this, one of the biggest reasons for doing it, is by having the wrists too wristy, so imagine playing a wedge shot around the green, you select your club you look at the shot you're faced with you need to get that ball high and you need to land it soft, so maybe just maybe you're setting up to it and trying to help the ball up in the air by going, and letting your wrists hinge too much, and when those wrists go you can see it’s very lose, it’s very flimsy, so from here can you just imagine if I take the club back and just go here, and then from there I unhinge my wrists, then the club will come back not where I started, but more right behind the ball.
So if I hit that far behind the ball, I’m going to hit the ground so there is the terminology a heavy golf shot comes. So we’ve got to get rid of the sort of wrist activity when you, when you play these shots. The number one thing is, select the club to do the job, is it a 54 degree sand wedge or a lob wedge at 60, 62, 64. And then from there we’ve got to trust that club selection. The setup would be club face on line, we want to set ourselves up with the feet open, that means that the feet are aiming to the left of the target, so as you look from this angle, sort of a parallel setup, we’re going to setup the body up to the left hand side so the body is now out of the way, from that position there, we want the weight 60, 40 with the weight leaning to the left hand side, this is what creates the angle, remember catching the fat shots is a lot of wrist activity, so I’m showing you the setup and then the swing.
So 60, 40 ball position forward towards the left heel, and I want you to keep the weight there, by keeping the weight on the left side we’ll create the angle of going up and then down, and as you take the club back you’ll notice before I start that, my hands were ahead of the club face, and this is vital because we want to hit down for the club to hit the ball up in the air, so if I keep my hands forward, and stay to your right, let’s exaggerate, let’s just swing with my hands, so here we go, take about arms, my hands are ahead the ball has gone up in the air and now she comes down. So again hands ahead, so take the club back over the arms and as I’m coming back down I still got my hands ahead. And that’s very, very important to keep the hands ahead of the club face at impact, and that way you should get rid of those heavy golf shots, so now you’ve got the knowledge to go out there and enjoy your practice and then go and see the results on the golf course.
