Claxton was a member of the SEC Championship winning team in 2002 when he was attending Auburn University. After graduating in 2005, Claxton turned pro. He played on the mini tours for a number of years, finding his feet pre dominantly on the Hooters Tour. In 2011, Claxton began to get more opportunities to play on the Nationwide Tour. At the end of the season he went to PGA Tour Q School to try and win a card for the 2012 season. After leading the tournament after four rounds, he managed to hold onto his place within the first 25 positions and earned his PGA Tour card.
In his first season on the main Tour, Claxton managed to make the first round of the FedEx play-offs. In 28 events, he made the cut in 21; he had seven top 25 finishes and two top 10 finishes. His best tournament came at the True South Classic when he finished in a tie for 5th place. Claxton held onto his card after finishing 120th on the money list. He has not registered a top 10 finish on the PGA Tour since his rookie season.
2013 was a turbulent year for the American. He only managed to make the cut in 9 out of 24 events and only registered one top 25 finish. Claxton finished the year 180th on the money list and therefore he had to attempt to regain his card by playing at the Web.com Tour Finals. He managed to finish 22nd in the Finals event, giving him back the card which he had recently lost. Claxton didn’t fare much better in 2014 when he lost his card again after only managing to play nine events. He had to have surgery on his left hip and therefore was granted a partial medical exemption for the 2015 PGA Tour season.
