Taniguchi was born in Nara, Japan in 1968 and went on to become one of the most successful Japanese professional golfers. Most of his incredible success has come on the Japan Golf Tour where he has achieved victory in a total of 19 tournaments. This has put him in tenth place on the list of most career victories. As a result of some of these victories, Taniguchi finished at the top of the money list on the Japan Tour, in 2002 and 2007. From 2007 to 2008 Taniguchi was the highest ranked Japanese golfer in the world and he has featured in the top 30 of golf’s World Rankings. In 2001, Taniguchi achieved some success outside of Japan, at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
More recently, Taniguchi has featured in golfing news for less happy reasons. During the US Open at Pinehurst in 2014, he made the cut after decent performances in the first two rounds. After the cut certain alterations were made to make the course a more difficult prospect, and Taniguchi certainly noticed the difference. He scored a very unimpressive 88 on the Saturday, which was 18 over par.
As of the end of 2014, Taniguchi had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $504,868.
