Simpson was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1956. While still attending Woodward Academy for high school, he became Atlanta Junior Champion, Georgia Junior Champion and Westlake National Junior Champion. After high school, Simpson went to college at the University of Georgia in Athens, where he continued to play golf. He did not graduate from college, choosing instead to finish early and turn professional in 1977. Simpson was just 21 when he earned his card to play on the PGA Tour.
Although Simpson achieved his first win as a professional at the Cacheral World Championship in Nimes, France, in 1982, he did not achieve his first PGA Tour win until 1985 when he was victorious at the Southern Open. He had a good year in 1989 when he won twice on the PGA Tour, at the USF&G Classic and the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic. He was again champion at the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic the following year. That year he also posted decent finishes at US Open, British Open and PGA Championship.
Sadly, Simpson contracted Lyme disease during a 1991 hunting trip, and the resulting problems brought his time playing on the PGA Tour to an end. He did recover enough to be able to spend some time playing on the Nationwide Tour, several years later. Results on this tour have included a second finish at the NIKE Buffalo Open in 1995 and a tie for second place at the NIKE South Carolina Classic that same year. In 2006 Simpson played on the Champions Tour for the first time.
As of the end of 2014, Simpson had achieved four wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $3,406,018.
