Wilkinson was born in Palmerston, New Zealand, in 1978. He was victorious at the New Zealand Stroke Play Championship in 2000, before turning professional in 2003. Two years into his professional career, Wilkinson joined the Nationwide Tour, but initially he did not have enough success to earn his card to progress and play on the PGA Tour. In 2007, Wilkinson finally finished in the top 25 at qualifying school and earned his place to compete on the PGA Tour the following season.

Although he didn’t win any tournaments, Wilkinson was relatively successful in his first season on the Tour. He was joint runner-up at the Valero Texas Open and finished in third place at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He ended the season in 92nd place on the money list.  After a shortened season in 2009, caused by a thumb ligament injury, Wilkinson played twelve events on the Tour in 2010, as the result of a medical extension. He did not earn enough money to retain his card for the PGA Tour and began playing on the Web.com Tour. In 2013 he earned enough money on the Web.com Tour to regain his card to play on the PGA Tour for the 2014 season.

As of the end of 2014, Wilkinson had yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour, but had amassed total prize money of $2,489,200.
