Potter is a left hander and was a successful amateur player in Florida. After graduating high school in 2002, he decided to turn pro rather than play college golf. He was 19 years old when turning pro. He played on the various min Tours for a number of years. Playing on the Nationwide Tour in 2004, he played 24 events, missing the cut in every one of them. It wasn’t until 2011 that Potter would have a solid season. He won twice, at the South Georgia Classic where he beat Australian Mathew Goggin by three shots and he then beat Andres Gonzalez and Miguel Carballa in a play-off at the Soboba Golf Classic. He also had two 3rd place finishes on his way to ending the year 2nd in the Nationwide Tour standings. As a result, he captured his first ever PGA Tour card.

Potter managed to win in his rookie season, capturing the Greenbrier Classic after a play-off with Troy Kelly. Potter shot 64 on both the Saturday and Sunday to put himself into contention. Potter had missed the cut in his five previous events before the win. It was his only top 10 finish that season but still managed to finish 62nd on the money list and most importantly, gain a two year Tour exemption thanks to his win.

In 2013, Potter played 22 events, making the cut in half of them. He had five top 25s with a best result of a tie for 6th place when he was defending his Greenbrier Classic title. He would finish the year 100th on the money list. Potter struggled in 2014, only making nine cuts in 24 events. He had no top 10s and his best result was a tie for 18th at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He is currently injured having undergone ankle surgery.
