Born in Hamilton, New Zealand, in 1971, Alker turned professional in 1995. That same year, Alker became a member of the PGA Tour of Australasia. This isn’t the only tour he has played on. He also played tournaments on the European Tour in 1998 and 1999. In 2000 Alker played on the Canadian Tour and won the Order of Merit. He moved on to play on the Nationwide Tour in the USA the following year. Although Alker gained his card to play on the PGA Tour after just one season playing on the Nationwide Tour he also lost it after just one season and went back to playing on the development tour, before returning to play in Europe for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. After spending two seasons playing in Europe, Alker went back to playing on the Nationwide Tour which is now the Web.com Tour. At the end of the 2014 season, Alker finished in 20th place at the Web.com Tour finals and earned his card to return to the PGA Tour.
As of the end of 2014, Alker had achieved no wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $386,862.
