McRoy was brought up in Huntsville, Alabama. He got his pet name Spike from his uncle, who was a massive fan of Ty Cobb, and sent McRoy a tiny Detroit Tigers uniform when he was newly born. After graduating from Virgil I. Grissom High School in 1986, McRoy went on to attend the University of Alabama and graduated in 1991. Soon after graduating, McRoy turned professional.
Since turning professional McRoy has split his time between the Buy.com/Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour, with a moderate level of success. In 2000 he was the top earner on the Buy.com Tour; a feat that was achieved due to the victories he achieved at the Buy.com Dakota Dunes Open and the Buy.com Tour Championship. Two years later, McRoy achieved his first win on the PGA, Tour, at the B.C. Open. Although McRoy has not played a full season on the PGA Tour since 2005 he does still complete at some events, as well as spending time playing on the Web.com Tour.
Away form the course, McRoy is a family man. He is married and the couple has three children. They live in Huntsville, where McCrory was honored to be inducted into the Huntsville-Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
As of the end of 2014, McRoy had achieved one win on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $2,412,578.
