Kim was born in South Korea in 1995. In 2012, Kim became the youngest player to compete at the PGA Tour Qualifying School and be successful in gaining entry to the PGA Tour. As he was still only 17 at the time he couldn’t join the Tour until he turned 18, mid-way thorough the 2013 season. Kim also played on  the Web.com Tour that year, and was more successful on that tour than  he was on the PGA Tour where he made the cut in just one out of eight starts.

Kim continued to play o the Web.com Tour in 2014 when he made the cut in 15 out of 19 starts. He was successful in finishing third at the Cleveland Open. The following season, Kim achieved his first win on the Web.com Tour, at the Stone brae Classic. He became the second youngest player to achieve a win on the Tour.

As of the end of 2014, Kim was yet to achieve a win on the PGA Tour and had won no prize money on the Tour.
