Hie was born in Balikpapan, Indonesia in 1988. He first played golf at the age of six, and went on to spend time in the US, where he was the most sought after junior player in 2006. He enjoyed a successful amateur career, including playing for the golf team at the University of Southern California, in the United States. Hie had achieved two amateur wins in 2008, before turning professional the same year. He achieved his first professional win, at the Mercedes International Championship, on his home soil, and only one month after he turned professional.
In 2011, Hie achieved further success, by becoming the first Indonesian born player to win outside of Indonesia, at the Tangshan China PGA Championship. When Hie gained full playing rights on the Asian Tour, he was the first Indonesian player to do so.
Hie’s father acts as his personal coach, and part time caddy.
As of the end of 2014, Hie was yet to achieve any success, or earn any money, on the PGA Tour.
