Born in Lovington, New Mexico, in1958, Black first used a golf club when he was nine years old. He attended Lamar University, in Texas after high school, where he first played golf on a proper golf course. He was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor at the university in 1993. He played golf all through his college years, before leaving, and turning professional in 1981. Black went on to achieve two wins on the PGA Tour, in the mid-1980s. He achieved his best result at a major when he achieved a tie for sixth place, at the Masters in 1984.

In 2008, Black started his Champions Tour career. The following year, he finished in a tie for second place, at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open.

Away from the course, Black makes his home in Tuscon, Arizona.As of the end of 2014, Black had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $3,155,054.
