Mi Rim Lee is one of the latest in a string of tremendous young Asian players to cross the ocean and stake a claim on the LPGA Tour.
Lee turned pro at age 19, playing on the mini tours and the Korean LPGA developmental tour. Lee began play on the Korean LPGA Tour in 2010. She collected her first win in 2011 and she finished 13th on the money list. In 2012, she won the Kia Motors Korean Women’s Open and rose to 7th on the money list. She won again in 2013 and began to focus on following in the footsteps of her many “Seoul Sisters” and playing on the more lucrative LPGA Tour in the United States.
At the young age of 24, Lee has already demonstrated the ability to “go low.” In the third round of the 2013 LPGA qualifying school, Lee shot a 61 on her way to finishing 2nd and earning her LPGA card for the 2014 season. A year later, at the 2014 Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship, Lee recorded a 62.
Lee completed a more than solid rookie season on the LPGA. After putting together a string of top tens, Mi Rim won her first LPGA event – the Meier LPGA Classic, a match play event. Lee defeated fellow Korean Inbee Park in a playoff to secure the title. The very next week, at the 2014 LPGA Championship, Lee finished in a tie for 6th place, her best performance to date in an LPGA Major.
Lee earned nearly a million dollars in her rookie season and finished second in the LPGA Rookie of the Year voting.
Her hot play has continued into this season. Lee has three top tens already in 2015 and has risen to 13th in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
