    Dawson played college golf at Florida Southern College before turning pro in 1985. For the first five years of his career, Dawson mainly plied his trade on the various mini Tours to be found in the United States. His first season on the Nationwide Tour was in 1990. Dawson finished the year 31st in the standings and as a result secured his first PGA Tour card.

    He played 29 events in his rookie season, making the cut in 12 of them. His best result came at the KMart Greater Greensboro Open where he was tied for 9th. He had his best ever finish on the PGA Tour in 1995 when he finished runner-up to Scott Hoch by three shots at the Greater Milwaukee Open. After the 1997 season, Dawson lost his main Tour card a number of times and spent his time playing on the two Tours. In 1999, he finished 2nd in the Nationwide Tour standings after having eleven top 10s including two runner-up finishes and two 3rd places. In 2002 he would finish 8th in the Nationwide Tour standings having won at the LaSalle Bank Open as well as finishing second on two occasions.

    Dawson became eligible for the Champions Tour in 2014. He finished a respectable 15th in the standings after his debut season. In eighteen events, Dawson finished in the top 10 on eight occasions including a runner-up finish at the AT&T Championship. He would win his first Tour event in 2015 at the Tucson Conquistadores Classic where he beat Bart Bryant by two strokes.
