Turnesa played college golf at North Carolina State University and turned pro shortly after graduating. Up until 2007, Turnesa mainly plied his trade on the various mini Tours to be found in the United States. He has played most of his career since then between the PGA and Nationwide Tours. In his rookie season on the Nationwide Tour in 2007, Turnesa captured the Miccosukee Championship on his way to ending the year 16th in the standings. As a result he won his first ever PGA Tour card for the following year.
Turnesa would have an outstanding rookie season. He captured his first (and only to date) PGA Tour title at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open where he finished a single stroke ahead of fellow American Matt Kuchar. He also lost out in a play-off that season at the Viking Classic to Will Mackenzie. Turnesa would end his rookie season 81st on the money list.
Since his great first year on the main Tour, Turnesa has struggled to keep his card. He has only played two full seasons on the main Tour since then and has only registered a single top 10 finish since 2008. He has been struggling with a back injury for the last number of years which has curtailed the amount of events that Turnesa can play.
