In his rookie season, Overton had two top 10 finishes on his way to finishing the season 136th on the money list. His season highlight was holing out for an albatross at the Barclays Classic at Westchester.

Overton had the first of four runner ups in the 2007 season. It came at the Wyndham Championship when he finished two shots behind Brandt Snedeker. Overton had two more top 10s that season on his way to finishing 99th on the money list. It was in the 2010 season that Overton had a breakout year that was riddled with heartache. He had three runner up finishes at the; Zurich Classic of New Orleans, HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Greenbrier Classic. He also had two third places finishes on his way to ending the year a career high 12th on the money list.
Overton has played consistent golf over the last couple of seasons however his first PGA Tour win is still elusive. He has played in eight Major Championship events with his best finish being at the 2010 British Open Championship when he finished in a tie for 11th at St. Andrews. He made his sole appearance at the Ryder Cup in 2010 at Celtic Manor, Wales. Along with Rickie Fowler, Overton was the first player to make the United States Ryder Cup team despite never winning a PGA Tour event.
