Eric Axley has doggedly pursued a PGA career since turning professional in 1997. By the early 2000’s Alexy had made his way to the Web.com Tour (then the Nationwide Tour). In 2005, Axley recorded 4 top tens in 21 starts and finished 16th on the money list and earned a tour card for the 2006 PGA season.
Axley won his first and so far only PGA tournament at the 2006 Valero Texas Open. He made 16 cuts that season recorded 5 top twenty-five performances and earned over $1.2 million.
Axley played well enough in 2007 and 2008 to retain his tour card, but managed just 3 top tens in over 70 starts.
In 2009, Axley’s play suffered significantly and he failed to make enough money to save his tour card.
Axley then went on a 4 year odyssey, playing a combination of mini-tours (NGA Hooters, eGolf Professional), Web.com events and the occasional PGA event when he could secure a sponsor’s invitation, all in an effort to regain his PGA tour card.
Finally, in 2014, Axley’s form began to return. He played in Monday qualifiers and managed to make it into 10 PGA events, making the cut in 7 of them and qualifying for the Web.com Tour finals where he played well enough to secure his card for the 2015 season.
Halfway through 2015, Axley is fighting to keep his card. He has made the cut in 5 of his 15 starts. He tied for 22nd at both the Puerto Rico Open and the McGladrey Classic and has earned just over $120,000 this season, putting him in 186th place on the PGA money list.
Axley’s best performance in a Major tournament was a tie for 9th place at the 2008 U.S. Open.
