    Points was born and raised in Pekin, Illinois, where he went to Pekin High School. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Illinois. While at college he was third team All-American. He also achieved several other successes by winning the Illinois State Amateur Championship in 1995, 1998, and 1999.

    After turning professional in 1999, Points began playing on the Buy.com Tour, which later became the Nationwide Tour. He played on this tour until 2004, winning three events. At the end of the 2004 season Points finished second on the Nationwide Tour money list, and earned his card for the PGA Tour for the following season. Having played on the PGA Tour for two seasons, he then dropped back to the Nationwide Tour. At the end of the 2008 season Points finished in 16th place on the Nationwide Tour money list, and regained his card to play on the PGA Tour. The following season was the first one in which he achieved success on the PGA Tour, where he finished in the top 10 on four occasions and ended the season in 66th place on the money list.

    It was another two years before Points achieved his first win on the PGA Tour, at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, in 2011. This win helped Points finish in 37th place on the money list at the end of the season. In 2013, Points achieved success for the second time on the PGA Tour, at the Shell Houston Open.

    Points has stated that his parents and his young cousin Carson are his heroes. Carson was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare, curable form of cancer. After he had undergone successful treatment he was nominated to represent Florida for the Children's Miracle Network. This resulted in him meeting President Obama in 2010.

    As of the end of 2014, Points had achieved two wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $9,819,953.
