Californian born Smith made his first hole-in-one at Presidio Hills when he was just ten years old. He went on to attend Pepperdine University, where he did not actually play golf during his last two years; but he still turned professional in 2001. He commenced playing on the Canadian Tour in 2005, but did not achieve a win until the 2007 season where he actually triumphed twice, as well as finishing in the top 10 on five occasions. That year he won the Order of Merit which meant that he had a five year exemption for the Canadian Tour. Smith didn’t win again on the Canadian Tour until 2009, when he triumphed at the Times Colonist Open.

Smith has also played on the Hooters Tour and the Web.com Tour. A 42nd place finish on the Web.Com Tour in 2014 meant that he secured a PGA Tour card for the 2014–15 season.
Away from the course Smith is a huge music fan, and was a base player in a band when he was younger.
