After turning professional in 1998, Van Pelt began his career on the Nationwide Tour, where he achieved his first win at the Omaha Classic in 2003; this was to be his only win on the Nationwide Tour. Despite playing PGA Tour tournaments for the first time in 1999, it was 2009 before he achieved his first Tour win at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee where he beat John Mallinger during a sudden death playoff.  His next win was at an unofficial PGA Tour event in 2011, the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic Malaysia.

The following year Van Pelt was partially successful, finishing in joint seventeenth place at the Masters, and achieving his first win on the European Tour, at the ISPS Handa Perth International in Australia.

A love of sport runs in Van Pelt’s family; his father having been selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the 1967 NFL draft. Away from the golf course both Van Pelt and his wife Carrie are heavily involved with Habitat for Humanity. Over time they have donated two houses, and they also hosted the 2007 and 2008 Habitat for Humanity Golf Tournament in Tulsa.

As of the end of 2014 Van Pelt had achieved one PGA Tour win, amassing prize money of $19,830,886.
