Anirban Lahiri is steadily making a name for himself in the world golf scene after a series of wins in India, two wins on the European Tour and making the cut in two of his first four Major starts, the 2012 Open Championship and the 2015 masters.
That’s pretty heady stuff for the son of an army doctor who was introduced to the game as an eight year old.
He turned professional in 2007 and began playing on the Professional Golf Tour of India. He won the Indian Tour’s Order of Merit (top money winner on tour) in 2009. Lahiri has won a total of 11 times on the Indian Tour.
In 2008, Lahiri also became a member of the Asian Tour. After grinding away for three years, he picked up his first win at the 2011 Panasonic Open. He followed it up a year later with another victory. He won twice more on the Asian Tour in 2014 and continued his steady climb with two wins to date in 2015 at the Maybank Malaysian Open and the Hero Indian Open. Lahiri’s win capped a big comeback as he began the day seven shots off the lead. The two wins in 2015 also count as wins on the European Tour which co-sanctions the events.
Lahiri’s debut in a Major happened at the 2012 Open. He made the cut by firing opening rounds of 68 and 72. He thrilled the crowd with an ace in round three and eventually finished in a tie for 31st place.
After missing the cut in his next two majors, Lahiri’s momentum continued when he qualified for the 2015 Masters Tournament. In doing so, he became just the third Indian national to play at Augusta National. He made the cut and tied for 49th place.
Lahiri’s consistent play earned him entry into the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings in 2014.
