Under Armour’s Spieth 3 Is the Company’s Most Advanced Golf Shoe to Date

Under Armour just revealed their new Spieth 3, which boasts a brand new all traction system and it’s marketed as the company’s most tech-advanced golf shoe to date. The name of the new footwear courtesy of Under Armour is due to the fact that this high-tech golf shoe was developed in collaboration with Jordan Spieth, a golf legend and three time major champion.

On top of that, Under Armour consulted a leader in biomechanics as they were developing the Spieth 3, and we’re talking about J.J.Rivet, a top scientist at the European Tour Performance Institute. With all these powers combined, a brand new and highly advanced all-traction system was created in the Spieth 3, marking one small step for the company, and a big leap for golf-kind. Joke aside, the brand spanking new Under Armour Spieth 3 is nothing short of amazing in terms of traction, combining the patented Softspikes Silver Tornado with the company’s RST 2.0, i.e. the low-profile Rotational Resistance Spike. These technologies combined are aimed at keeping your feet in close contact with the ground for maximum traction in any condition imaginable.

In doing so, the Spieth 3’s amazing traction will permit you to use the ground as a leverage of sorts to power your swing while preventing slipping, thus minimizing power loss while providing unparalleled control. Here we have the Director of Global Golf Footwear Mike Forsey, describing the new Under Armour Spieth 3, but let’s quote the man himself on this one:

“Traction is what separates golf footwear from street shoes. Under Armour Golf continues to be the only golf footwear brand speaking to traction to support the golf swing. With the Spieth 3, we’ve added vertical traction elements which allow the golfer to naturally harness vertical force to bring more power to the ball at impact.”

Compared to its predecessors, the new Under Armour Spieth 3 is lighter and also waterproof, yet it offers excellent breathability due to a woven jacquard in the forefoot. There’s also a carbon fiber made plate located on the EVA midsole, aimed at adding to the shoe’s stability.

The combination of Under Armour’s low-profile Rotational Resistance Spike (RST 2.0) and Softspikes Silver Tornado in the Spieth 3 looks to keep feet in contact with the ground for as long as possible. In doing so, it allows players to use the ground for leverage to power the swing and prevent slipping, which according to the company ensures maximum control while minimizing power loss.

Speaking on Under Armour’s new traction control system, Mike Forsey, Director of Global Golf Footwear, said

The Spieth 3 features a lower overall weight construction than its predecessors and it makes for an all-weather waterproof shoe with a woven jacquard in the forefoot for improved breathability. The Spieth 3 also features a carbon-fiber plate on the EVA midsole for added stability. To quote from Jordan Spieth’s essay on the Spieth 3 shoe:

Under Armour’s Spieth 3 Is the Company’s Most Advanced Golf Shoe to Date

“Forsey began working with J.J. Rivet, a biomechanist who is the chief expert on how a golfer’s body moves during the golf swing. Those two started talking about the Spieth 3 and J.J. introduced us to the Hendrix “Torsion” Bar, a structure in your foot that runs from your heel to your second toe. During your swing, if your weight shift stays balanced over the bar, you gain a new level of control over your body and can turn more efficiently. It’s a game changer. Every design detail of the Spieth 3 supports this concept, top to bottom. The result is not only my next signature, it actually sets up how we will tackle every shoe we design from here on out.”

Basically, 3 time golf champion Jordan Spieth told Under Armour’s R&D team to build their next signature golf-shoe as light as possible, but without sacrificing comfort or traction in the process, and the footwear designers complied. In case you were wondering, you’ll have to cough $200 for a pair of Under Armour’s signature golf shoe, but we’re sure it will worth the stretch.
