TaylorMade’s 2019 Milled Grind 2.0 wedges Are Here

TaylorMade is a big name in golf, which is pretty much synonymous with high quality premium gear, and their 2019 Milled Grind 2.0 wedges boast a TPU insert, along with a bold raw face design. If you were wondering what’s up with these beautiful wedges, you should learn that they’ve already seen action in Tiger Woods’ bag, as they were spotted on Tour relatively recently, and by that we mean back in August, the current year. The second generation of TaylorMade’s Milled Grind Wedges—the Milled Grind 2 (MG2) respectively is already available at retail shops all across North America since August 12th if memory serves, and they feature a brand spanking new raw face design, which is optimized for spin and precision.

The MG2 comes with ZTP Raw grooves, which were designed to offer deeper, sharper and narrower grooves, as well as a sharper radius; these features work along with the rougher face design, which is due to a technological process called laser etching between the grooves, which is aimed at helping players to achieve more friction between the ball and the club face, that obviously promotes maximum greenside spin. According to TaylorMade’s Research and Development team, the raw face design works very different compared to classical plated grooves, which are found on most wedges, as in it helps with increasing friction, thus reducing the ability for the ball to skid up the face before it grips. Basically, these clever design innovations promote a more consistent ball flight, which after all’s said and done is the ultimate goal of a proper wedge. Here’s Bill Price, Senior Director of Product Creation, Putters & Wedges commenting about TaylorMade’s new raw face design:

“Our Tour Players have long benefited from the performance raw wedges offer and it’s great to now be able to offer these performance gains to golfers of all levels. We’re confident they will enjoy the look, feel and performance that a raw face has to offer.”

It’s worth mentioning that every raw wedge head comes with a 3M adhesive sticker, an air tight variety respectively, that has been particularly designed for the respective wedge, in order to be applied to the face to prevent it from rusting before first use/purchase or whatever. After the customer removes the sticker, the face will start oxidizing, i.e. the rusting process begins, which is normal so don’t worry about it. The new wedge features a 6.5 mm thick face, which is a tad more compared to MG1’s 5.1 mm; the company describes this as a thick-thin head design, whatever that means. However, the engineers had to solve the challenge of creating a thicker club head, but without the disadvantage of adding weight, hence they used a TPU insert in the back cavity. This feature also helps with vibration dampening, and contributes to the wedge’s solid and positive feel upon ball impact. TaylorMade also claims that the new design makes for an optimized center of gravity location, which is nice on their part. Finally, the 2019 Milled Grind 2.0 wedges are CNC milled, just like the MG1 and/or the P7TW irons, which means that every sole grind/leading edge is consistently and accurately replicated. The MG2 arrives in 2 finishes, Matte Black and Chrome Satin, with True Temper’s Dynamic Gold S200 (steel) shaft and a Golf Pride Tour Velvet Burgundy 360 grip, having a $169.99 MSRP price.
