TaylorMade Introduces P790 TI Irons

TaylorMade announced recently their new 2019 P790Ti Titanium Irons, in what can be best described as an attempt to make an already awesome iron (the P790 respectively) even better. And they managed to pull that off with flying colors, as the new titanium made irons are designed to literally break the speed of sound, i.e. they’re incredibly fast, and that’s most probably due to the company’s choice of exotic materials. Titanium made golf gear is the latest trend in the industry, and TaylorMade’s P790 TI has been the buzz on the street lately. Fortunately for our readers, these babies are already available at major US retailers, and if you can live with the price tag, which is ample (more on that in a second), you should definitely take them for a spin. And speaking of price tags, the new P790 TI retail for $2,799.99 (4-AW) with Nippon 950GH NEO steel shafts and Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 grips, and if that’s not enough for you, you can always go for the $2,999.99 version, that features Mitsubishi MMT graphite shafts. Yes, that’s a lot of money, hence the next question is: what do I get for almost $3k?

Well, the new irons feature a cast 9-1-1- titanium body with machined 6-4 titanium face, urethane foam and internal tungsten weight, and they can be yours starting from November 8th. Now, to give you a little bit of context, TaylorMade’s P790 irons have been incredibly popular for the last year and a half, but with the new titanium-made version, the company took iron design to the extreme. Titanium is a very expensive material, and it’s being used mostly in the automotive industry as well in the aerospace industry, because it’s extremely light yet very strong (and expensive). The P790 TI’s body is built using 9-1-1 titanium, and the same goes for the face, 6-4 titanium respectively. As you can already guess from the materials used in these babies, the P790 TI are built for players looking for ultimate performance. Basically, these are premium irons by any metrics, and they’re crafted by putting together some of the strongest and lightest materials on God’s green earth, being arguably some of the most mass dense clubs in golf today.

And that’s because unlike steel, titanium’s mass properties are a completely different story, but let’s take a quick look at the science behind that: steel weighs approximately 8 g/cm3, while titanium is 4.5 g/cm3. Using basic math, that means steel weighs 43 percent more compared to titanium in the same volume, i.e. a titanium made iron like the P790 TI shaves a lot of weight in its construction by default; as we already told you, the entire body of the P790 TI is made of titanium, as well as the face. Moving along with our story, a regular solid-steel club head, let’s say a 7 iron, weighs approximately 268 grams. Considering the weight difference between titanium and steel, a titanium-made head will only weight a mere 153 grams. Okay you may ask, but then again, how can you put mass where it needs to be (in the head) without creating a big-headed (and ugly) iron? The obvious answer is tungsten, which incidentally is one of the densest metals on Earth.

And TaylorMade did just that, i.e. they put 119 grams of tungsten in each P790 TI club head, in their quest for pushing the limits of the club’s forgiveness; by doing so, they achieved another essential feature in a premium iron: they drove the CoG as low and far back as possible. Now, let’s take a look at the face: TaylorMade dropped casting, and they created the P790 TI with a machined face (titanium baby), which is supported by their proprietary SpeedFoam technology. Using machining instead of casting, TaylorMade’s engineers were able to precisely control the face dimensions, thus saving even more weight. Moreover, there’s a slot in the P790 TI’s sole, which goes all the way through the head; the respective slot is covered by a special polymer material, in order to keep water and debris from getting inside; however, the slot plays another role, i.e. it helps expand the sweet spot downwards, thus making the iron more playable and improving ball speed on miss hits. Finally, the new TaylorMade P790 TI are arguably the most high tech irons ever made by the company, making for the pinnacle of golf engineering, and we’re not mincing words either.
