If you play golf for a number of years you will have hit the dreaded “shank shot”, and once hit, it is never forgotten. But for those people who aren’t sure about what a shank is, is when you come in to a ball with an iron and you contact with the heel of the golf club. Now this part of the golf club where there could be set back from the heel, where the loft is at it this is known as the shank. And when the ball is contacted from that part of the club it exerts an excessive amount of spin and fires the ball off to the right hand side.

Depending on how deep that you are in to the shank, depends on how much you use the bottom of the club as well, it can go very, very low or it can go high and arc off. The one thing about the shank which is, which makes it the worse golf shot really out of all of them is the uncontrollable nature of them and also is very rare that you will hit it out the shank and get away with it. Because normally it travels that far and fast to the right hand side, it will get itself in to trouble and it is such a horrible feeling that it is something that stays with the golfer. If you hit one shank out on the golf course, then you will be worried about that shot for the rest of the round. And often is the case that when you are worried about it you will hit more, you will hit more and it will become a progressive problem. However, there are technical reasons for why you are hitting the hosel off the golf club, bear in mind, that thy heel is only a very short distance away from the centre of the golf club. So there is no reason why you cannot move that impact point, the only problem is making sure that you have the courage to do so not being put off by hitting a few shanks and knowing the technical on depending of why you are doing here.
