All positive golfers require control over emotions, but one of the key areas that you really need to think about is the short game. The reason for this is the short game is made of much more touch and feel shots. It sometime is not impossible to be absolutely fuming and still have very good driver shot because you just try to validate as hard as you can but around the greens when there is more controls that’s when you really do need to have ultimate control over what you are thinking and over what you are feeling.
The reason for this is if you are getting angry and you are getting frustrated and you are getting nervous around the short shots, the first thing that will manifest yourself physically is a very tight grip and you are gripping onto that club very, very tightly that only gave the amount of feel that you have within your hands. If I have a two very simple practice swings here, just on a half little picture. Now on the first one, I'm going to get setup the same, I'm going to have a very, very nice relaxed grip, I have a nice lose tempo, I’m just going to be brushing the grounds I come through, just trying to get the feeling of what it would be like to chip that ball towards the home.
On my second shot, I'm going to mimic a very, very tight grip and you can see how much more rigid and how much more stiff my whole technique is. The issue with that is that as it becomes more rigid, as it becomes more stiff, I lose the ability to feel within my hands and touch around the greens is very, very important. Couple that steeper tight grip pressure in with what caused the anger then I'm not going to be able to control much, also it will breath nervousness and when you are nervous around the greens, a lot of people watching this will understand that I will breathe those little thin shots, those fast shots and when you are putting those pushes and those pulls.
Being able to control your emotions in this area of the game is absolutely key, so use the drills that we’ve already spoken about, the mental techniques and please use a pre-shot routine. That will help you approach every shot in a very similar way and help you achieve the results that you want to see when playing short game shots.
