Appleby was born in Cohuna, Victoria, Australia where he grew up on a dairy farm. When he was still young Appleby played Australian Rules Football, but he also hit plenty of golf balls around the wide open spaces of the farm. After finishing his education, Appleby turned professional in 1992.
He began his professional career playing on the PGA Tour of Australasia. In 1995 Appleby made his first start on the Nike Tour in the USA. He went on to achieve another win that same season. At the end of that season he finished in 5th place on the Nike Tour money list and earned his card to play on the PGA Tour the following season. Since he began playing on the PGA Tour Appleby has achieved several wins and he also lost out in a four way play-off at the Open Championship in 2002. In 2004 he rose into the top 10 of golf’s World Rankings.
Away from the course Appleby has suffered tragedy in his personal life. His first wife Renay was killed in a car accident in London, in 1998. He also suffered the death of his friend and fellow golfer Payne Stewart in a plane crash. Since this incident Appleby has acted as a father figure to Stewart’s children, Aaron and Chelsea. He has also re-married himself, to Ashley and the couple has four children.
As of the end of 2014, Appleby had achieved nine wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $28,774,159.
