After turning pro in 1989, Lonard plied his trade on his native Australasian Tour for a few years before joining the European Tour in 1991. He contracted a rare virus in 1993 and was out of the game for a year. He worked as a club professional for a few years before returning to tournament golf in 1996. His first season back, he was first on the Australasian Tour Order of Merit. He returned to the European Tour the following season and played reasonable golf there for a few years. His best result on the European Tour money list was 22nd which was in 2002. In 2003 he would once again top the Australasian Order of Merit.
He started playing on the PGA Tour in 2004 full time after coming through Q School. He captured his first and only PGA Tour title in 2005 at the MCI Heritage. He won the title by two strokes and was one of three top 10s that season. He would end the best year of his career 34th on the money list. He would lose his full card in 2009 and so Lonard played on the Web.com Tour for a number of years since without much success. His best finish to date in a Major Championship was finishing 11th at the 2002 US Open. He made appearances in both the 2003 and 2005 President Cup matches.
