Lye was a three time All American athlete while playing golf at San Jose University. After a successful college career, Lye turned pro in 1975. He earned his first PGA Tour card for the 1977 season. In his rookie year, Lye played 25 events, making the cut on 18 occasions. He had a total of five top 25 finishes. His breakout year came in 1980 when he finished runner-up twice and third once on his way to finishing the year 39th on the money list.

Lye won his first and only PGA Tour title in 1983 at the Bank of Boston Classic. He finished with a final round of 64 to win the title by a single stroke ahead of John Mahaffey, Sammy Rachels and Jim Thorpe. This was by far his best year on Tour. He added a runner-up finish and a third place finish to his win and ended the year 28th on the money list.

Lye played a total of 486 events on the PGA Tour, making the cut in 332 of them. He retired from the Tour in 1995 due to a hand injury after he tore a ligament while playing the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He had surgery to fix the problem. After the injury troubles, Lye began working as a commentator. He was even part of the 1996 hit movie, Happy Gilmore. After becoming eligible for the Champions Tour, Lye began to play a few events in 2003. He would play a total of 40 times on the Tour, finishing in the top 10 on a single occasion.
