Brooks was chosen as an All American three times when playing golf at the University of Texas. After graduating in 1983, Brooks turned pro. His first season on the PGA Tour was in 1984. He played 35 events, making the cut on 17 occassions. He had a single top 10 at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic. He captured his first of eight Tour wins in 1988 at the Canon Sammy Davis Jr.-Greater Hartford Open after a play-off with Dave Barr and Joey Sindelar. He would also lose out to Tom Purtzer in a play-off at the Gatlin Brothers-Southwest Golf Classic that season. He ended the year 36th on the money list.
He won twice in 1991, first at the KMart Greater Greensboro Open after a three hole play-off with Gene Sauers and then at the Greater Milwaukee Open where he defeated Robert Gamez by a single stroke. Brooks would end the season 11th on the money list. Brooks had the best season of his career in 1996 when he won three times including his first (and only) Major Championship title. In January he won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic by a single shot from John Huston. A few months later, he beat Jeff Maggert in a play-off for the Shell Houston Open. The icing on the cake was victory at Valhalla Golf Club for the PGA Championship. He beat Kenny Perry on the first extra hole to claim the title. Brooks would end the year a career bets 3rd on the money list.
The PGA Championship was Brooks’ eight and last Tour victory. He did come close to winning his second Major in 2001 at the US Open however he was defeated by Retief Goosen after an eighteen hole play-off. Brooks has been heavily involved in golf course design in recent years while also playing on the Champions Tour since 2011.
