Lucas Glover won the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Sunday, August 13, 2023. He defeated Patrick Cantlay in a one-hole playoff. Glover finished regulation at 15 under par, while Cantlay was one stroke back. In the playoff, Glover made a par putt on the 18th hole, while Cantlay found the water off the tee and made bogey.
This was Glover's sixth career PGA Tour victory. He also won the Wyndham Championship last week, making him the first player to win consecutive events on the PGA Tour since Tony Finau in 2022. Glover's win moves him to third in the FedEx Cup standings.
Glover's victory was a surprise to many. He had not won on the PGA Tour since 2011, and he had struggled with his putting in recent years. However, he has made a change to his putting stroke in the past few months, and it has paid off in a big way. Glover has made 43 putts per round in his last two victories, which is the best two-week stretch of his career.
Glover's win is a reminder that anything is possible in golf. He is a 43-year-old journeyman who had not won in over a decade. But he never gave up, and he kept working hard. And now he is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour in the span of two weeks. It is an incredible story, and it is sure to inspire many golfers.
Glover had a successful college career at Clemson University where he was a two time All-American. He was part of the United States team for the 2001 Walker Cup. After graduating, Glover turned pro in 2001. He began playing on the Nationwide Tour. He won a PGA Tour card after the 2003 season by finishing 16th in the Nationwide Tour standings. He won his first Tour title at the Gila River Classic at Wild Horse Pass Resort and had a further five top 10s that season.
Glover played 30 times in his rookie season, making the cut on 17 occassions. He had two top 10s with his bets result coming at the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort. He would finish his rookie season 134th on the money list and therefore, he had to go to Q School to retain his card. He claimed his first PGA Tour win the following season at the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort by a single stroke over Tom Pernice Jr. It looked to be heading for a play-off at best until Glover holed a 35 yard bunker shot on the last hole to claim victory. This was one of seven top 10s that season on his way to ending the year 30thon the money list.
Glover’s second PGA Tour win was a big one. It came at the 2009 US Open which was played at the Bethpage Black Course. A second round of 64 helped him claim victory by two strokes from Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes. He would have 12 top 25 finishes that season and ended the year a career best 9th on the money list. His third and most recent PGA Tour win came at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2011 after he defeated Jonathan Byrd in a play-off. It was his only top 10 of the year and Glover has struggled with his game since, registering only two top 10s in the last four seasons.
