Westwood only started playing golf at the age of thirteen. He went on to have solid amateur career and turned pro in 1993. He started playing on the European Tour in 1994 and it was in 1996 that he captured the first of 23 (to date) European Tour wins at the Volvo Scandinavian Masters. Next season Westwood won on four different Tours; the European, Japanese, Australasian and Asian Tours. He made his debut in the Ryder Cup that year as part of the victorious European team. Westwood has been a true global player throughout his career and can boast many wins across the various Tours. As well as 23 European Tour wins (He also has five play-off losses), Westwood has 2 PGA Tour wins, 4 Japanese Tour wins, 9 Asian Tour wins, 3 Sunshine Tour wins, 1 Australasian Tour win and 2 Sunshine Tour events.
Westwood has topped the European Tour money list twice in his career, in 2000 when he won five times on the Tour and also had two runner-up finishes and three 3rd places. The second money title came in 2009 when he won twice including winning the season ending event in Dubai. Westwood became the world number one in October 2010 and held the position for 22 weeks. Westwood is yet to win a Major Championship despite coming close on numerous occasions. Westwood has finished in the top 5 of a Major on ten occasions including being runner-up twice, at the 2010 Masters and 2010 British Open.
He has played in the last nine Ryder Cups, being on the winning side on seven occasions. He remained unbeaten in both 2004 and 2006 (when he was a wild card). He currently holds the record for being the European to have been a member of the most victorious teams. Westwood has won a total of 23 points in his Ryder Cup career which is fourth in the all-time list with Nick Faldo holding the record with 25 points.
