Thorpe turned pro in 1972 shortly after graduating from Morgan State University. Thorpe played on the various mini tours for a number of years before he captured a PGA Tour card. His first full season on the main Tour was in 1979. His best result in his rookie season was a runner-up finish. This was one of two top 10 finishes for Thorpe in his rookie season.

Thorpe had a breakout year in 1983 where Thorpe had two runner-up finishes, at the Houston Coca-Cola Open and the Bank of Boston Classic. He finished the season a then career best 46th place on the money list. Thorpe captured his first PGA Tour title in 1985 at the Greater Milwaukee Open. He finished three shots ahead of Jack Nicklaus and his week included a round of 62 on the Friday. He won for a second time that season a month later at the Seiko-Tucson Match Play Championship where he won the final 4&3. Thorpe came close to winning a third event in 1985 when he narrowly lost in a play-off to Scott Verplank at the Western Open. This was the best season of his career and finished 4th on the money list.
The following season, Thorpe won his third and final PGA Tour title at the Seiko-Tucson Match Play Championship where he was defending champion. He beat Scott Simpson in the final. This was one of seven top 10 finishes in the 1986 season. Thorpe played on the PGA Tour until he lost his full card after the 1996 season.

Thorpe joined the Champions Tour in 1999. He has won thirteen Champions Tour events to date with his last win coming in 2007 at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. One of those wins was a Senior Major Championship, the Countrywide Tradition in 2002 when he beat John Jacobs in a play-off.
