Byrd had a very successful college career while attending Clemson University. He was a first team All American in 1999, he was a first team all ACC choice for four years and he was a member of the United States team at the 1999 Walker Cup. After graduating in 2000, Byrd turned pro. He played a full season on the Nationwide Tour in 2001. He finished the season 8th in the standings after winning once (at the Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs), finished runner-up once and had a third place finish. He earned his first ever PGA Tour card as a result.

Byrd was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2002. He captured his first Tour win in his second last event of the season at the Buick Challenge. After shooting a final round of 63, Byrd finished a single stroke ahead of David Toms. This was one of four top 10s that season and he finished his rookie year 39th on the money list.

His second Tour win came in 2004 at the B.C. Open where he finished one shot ahead of Ted Purdy. A third win came in 2007, this time at the John Deere Classic and Byrd would go on to finish 28th in the FedEx Cup standings. Despite playing some good golf, it wasn’t until 2010 that Byrd won again. The win came at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open after a play-off against Martin Laird and Cameron Percy. Byrd would win his fifth and most recent Tour win at the start of the following season at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. He defeated Robert Garrigus after a play-off. Later that season, Byrd lost to Lucas Glover in a play-off at the Wells Fargo Championship. This was Byrd’s best season on Tour, he finished the year 22nd on the money list. He has played consistent but unspectacular golf since.
