Day has been playing golf since he was two years old. He had a handicap of five by the age of ten. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1988, Day turned pro. Day played on a number of different mini tours, finding his feet after he turned pro. He won his card for the 1994 PGA Tur season after qualifying through Q School. Day proceeded to hold onto his full card until the 2010 season. In his first year on Tour, Day managed four top 10 finishes including one runner-up finish. This second place came at the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic, finishing three shots behind Mark McCumber. He finished his rookie season 45th on the money list.

For the next couple of seasons Day played consistent golf without registering any great finishes. Finally, in 1998 he had his breakout season. Day had six top 10 finishes including two third places and two runner-up places. One of the runner-up finishes was at the unofficial ‘Fifth Major,’ the Players Championship at Sawgrass where he finished two shots behind Justin Leonard. He went on to finish 15th on the money list that season.

The 1999 season brought a first ever Tour win for Day. Having finished runner up the year before, this time Day made no mistake at the MCI Classic in April. After a final round 66, Day ended up in a play-off with two Major champions, Payne Stewart and Jeff Sluman. Day won at the first play-off hole. This was one of seven top 10s that season. In the following seasons, Day began to struggle and eventually lost his full card in 2009 having had to return to Q School a couple of times before that. Day now relies on invites on the main Tour and plays often on the Web.com Tour. At forty nine years old, Day will soon be eligible for the Champions Tour.
