Baek Kyu-jung, also known as Q Baek in the United States, is a South Korean golfer who will play full-time on the LPGA Tour in 2015.
Baek was an outstanding amateur in South Korea. She turned professional as a 17-year old and played the minor league Dream Tour in South Korea. Baek won twice on the Dream Tour and graduated to the KLPGA Tour in 2014.
Baek stormed onto the scene in 2014, winning her first KLPGA title in just her 4th start. She won four times on tour that season, including the KLPGA Major title the KLPGA Championship.
She also won the KEB-HanaBank Championship which is co-sanctioned by the LPGA. Baek birdied five straight holes on the back nine in the final round which got her into a sudden death playoff which she won with another birdie on the first hole.
The win was significant for two reasons. It qualified Baek for the 2015 LPGA Tour and it vaulted her to #11 in the Rolex world rankings.
Baek finished the 2014 season with 13 top tens, over 600 million won (South Korean currency) in earnings and Rookie of the Year honors.
Her exodus to the United States for the 2015 season continues the pattern of top South Korean rookies who leave the KLPGA for the richer purses in America. Through the end of May 2015, Baek has made the cut in 9 of her first 11 starts on the LPGA Tour with her best finish a tie for 12th place at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.
