Gay was a child of the military, having a father who was a non-commissioned officer in the US Army; he was born in Fort Worth, Texas and raised in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Although his father was in the armed forces for a career, he spent much of his spare time playing the game which his son was to take up professionally, and was a member of the All-Army golf team. For this reason, Gay spent a lot of his childhood around the golf course. His prowess as a young golfer led to Gay achieving an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida. During his time at the university he played on Buddy Alexander's Florida Gators men's golf team. Gay had a successful College career which led to him being inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame, in 2010.
Having turned professional in 1994, Gay joined the PGA Tour in 1999. It took him almost 300 starts to achieve his first win on the Tour, at the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun in 2008. This was followed by a second win, at the Verizon Heritage, the following year. He also achieved his highest position on the money list that year, finishing in 13th place, as well as his highest position in the World Rankings, at 35th.
It took until 2013 for Gay to achieve his next win on the PGA Tour, at the Humana Challenge. This resulted in him winning the PGA Tour player of the month award for January.
As of the end of 2014, Gay had achieved four wins on the PGA Tour, amassing total prize money of $17,795,366.
