Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York where he originally excelled at Baseball. He didn’t embark on his golfing life until he suffered a football injury, which also put a stop to any baseball ambitions. He continued to play golf while at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. While he was still at college Murphy played on Buster Bishop's Florida Gators men's golf team and he had his first successes as an amateur golfer, at the 1965 U.S. Amateur and the 1966 individual NCAA championship. He also won All-American status in 1966.

After graduating with a degree in health and human performance, Murphy turned professional in 1967. Over his career Murphy won five PGA Tour tournaments, and his best finish in a major was in a second place tie at the PGA Championship in 1970. Since then Murphy has gone on to win eleven times on the Senior PGA Tour, which is now the Champions Tour.

Murphy has used his golfing prowess off the course as well as on it, with a career in broadcasting which began while he was still playing. He began his broadcasting career working for CBS and went on to work for ESPN then NBC, until 2009 when he retired.

Over the years Murphy has gained enormous respect for continuing on a golfing career despite having problems with arthritis. This was recognized in 1996 when he was given the Ben Hogan Award from the Golf Writers Association of America in recognition of his comeback to the golfing scene after his arthritis problems. Away from the world of golf Murphy, and his wife Gail, live in Delray Beach, Florida.

As of the end of 2014, Murphy had achieved five wins on the PGA Tour, amassing prize money of $1,611,569.
