Born in Spain in 1983, José Alejandro Cañizares Gómez, attended College in the US and won the 2003 NCAA men's golf championship, while he was still studying at Arizona State University. It didn’t take Canizares long to achieve his first win after turning professional in 2006; he was successful on his third start, at the Imperial Collection Russian Open. This victory meant that he qualified to play on the European tour for the next two years. This seemed an impressive start to a promising professional career.
Cañizares first competed on the PGA tour in 2007, having been successful at the 2007 PGA Qualifying Tournament. He spit his time between the PGA and European Tours that year but only succeeded in maintaining his right to play in Europe.
Since then Cañizares has again been successful in Europe winning the Trophée Hassan II tournament in Morocco in 2014; this ended eight years without a tour win.
Cañizares comes from of Spain’s most famous golfing families; his father José Maria was a regular on the Ryder Cup team in the early 1980s. His brother Gabriel also used to play on the Challenge Tour. Off the golf course is a keen sportsmen in general; enjoying keeping himself fit. He also enjoys music ad spending time at the beach.
As of the end of 2014 Cañizares has competed in twenty six PGA Tour events. He has never won on the PGA Tour, and has amassed $477,403 in prize money since he first competed.
