Mikko Ilonen is a 35 year old Finnish golfer and mostly ply’s his trade on the European Tour. However last year he won the 2014 World March Play Championship with really catapulted him up the world rankings and into the national and international spotlight. Now, what Mikko Ilonen has in his swing, is a very, very straight, and a very, very upright left arm position. And he manages to maintain this pretty much all throughout his swing, which allows it to be in a repeatable consistent position throughout the swing.

And it also allows him to have repeatable and consistent golf shots. So what Mikko Ilonen does, he’s got a slightly hinged posture at address which isn’t something you normally see. But as he takes the club upwards, the left arm begins to extend and it extends very high and very upright at the top of the backswing. Now from there he drives his lower half through very, very hard, the left arm stays extended and straight, all the way into impact. So it doesn’t really change in its relationship with the club a massive amount all the way into the impact area. And it’s a great way to maintain a consistent position between your arm and between the club during the backswing and the downswing. If you want to try and repeat this, [Inaudible] [0:01:26] over the ball, extend the left arm away and then extend it up and then just try and keep it straight, as you actually hit. And if he’s beating the best players in the world with that match play, he certainly must be doing something right.
