Should my golf down swing start before my back swing ends? Now this is a very tricky question, because in general you want the back swing to be completed before the down swing actually starts and keeping it in a kinetic sequence and actually keeping everything moving in order is the best way to achieve a consistent strike. However starting the actual down swing before the back swing has been completed can create an extra amount of club head speed, which I’ll go into in a moment. But in general to hit the most consistent shots, you want the back swing to be completed before the down swing begins. So what we want to be doing is taking the club away nice and wide turning the shoulders rotating away from the target, up until about this point here, where the club head actually stops, the hands stop, and then the actual lower half is placed against the upper body and then you can stir the gradual turn into the ball.

A lot of the greatest players if you watch them, if you put their swing, you kind of a super slow motion, they don’t actually reach the top of their swing and there’s just a split second where everything just stops and everything just pauses. And then the actual downswing begins. So that’s the most consistent way to actually move your body and hit the ball consistently. Well however if you want to achieve a little bit more distance and a little bit more club head speed, actually reaching the top of the swing this point here and then actually starting the hip turn and the movement through the ball can really increase the coil between the upper and the lower body, and that can really increase the club head speed coming through the ball. Now the easiest way to do it, is actually start turning the body again up to the top of the swing but just before it reaches the top feeling that a little bit of a twist and feeling the turn in the hips, and it almost kind of lag of the club a little bit better behind and really cause that extra bit of club head speed. Especially utilized if you want to hit a very, very big drive but just as a word of warning, it can cause inconsistent ball flights, because things aren’t moving quite in the natural order. So give it a go by all means, but you’ll find that the most consistent golf shots is to move everything in the correct order, have that imperceptible pause at the top of the swing before continuing the down swing in the correct sequence. So give it a go see what happens but you should find that more consistency is gained by moving everything in the correct order completing the backswing before starting the downswing.
