The great drill that you can use to try and help ensure that that one angle of attack and to really strike the ball and generate lots of backspin is this line drill. Very simple to use, very simple to set up, and every effective in visualizing how you want to be approaching the impact. So I’ve got this line set up right in between my feet, I got my 56 degree sand wedge here. And what I’m going to do is I’m going to get set up but I’m going to be aiming for a point just after the ball. Because what I want to happen here is coming down into impact, strike the ball, strike the turf and create a divot after this line. If I have a divot which starts before the line then I will know that my angle of attack is bottomed out too soon and I’ve tried to come through and flick the ball off up into the air.

If you do that then you will be presenting a loft absolutely where you’d be scooping the ball off the surface if you strike it well which will hit the ball high but it won’t generate lots and lots of backspin. It also brings into the risk of hitting a fat shot and also brings into the risk of hitting a thin shot. If you can continuously come down, hit the ball first and then that turf as you move through, you’ll be out to hit consistent strikes. So I’m going to get setup, the ball position in the middle of my stance, I’m going to take it back and swing through, and just try and take that divot after the line. And that is pretty much spot on. So I’ve got my line, the ball position was in the center, the divot starts just beyond, and the end is just here. So what I know as I hit this, my angle of attack move down through the point of impact, I’ve hit the ball first and then the turf, and I’ve hit a pretty decent spinning shot. So if you do want to generate that spin, if you do want to give a drill to go to help you achieve that, use the line drill and hopefully you’ll see good success.
