How to Improve your Golf Swing One Change at a Time (Video) - by Pete Styles

Now, with all the teaching books, the teaching DVDs, the different instructors out there and also the Internet, there are lots of different information about how to improve your golf game. And undoubtedly, most of that information is good quality information and it will help you improve. But we have to put a caveat on that. It has to be done in the right format. You can't just throw loads and loads of information into your brain and expect to go out in the golf course and play better.

So what I would suggest is the first thing to do to improve at golf is to asses where you are currently. So, either have a really good detailed analysis of your golf swing and of your golf game or actually employ a golf professional, preferably a PJ qualified golf professional, to do that for you. Then work out the timeline of how many bits of your game you'd like to improve on, which standard you'd like to be able to get to. And then, work out which is the priority, which is the biggest thing that would give you the best improvements for the shortest amount of time and the least amount of work. And start working at those major areas, those priorities. And make sure you finish one move before you move on to the next movement.

So let's say, for example, that your mistake is in your grip. Let's make sure that the grip is absolutely perfect before we progress onto the next part. Now, that might take one [indiscernible] [01:24] of session. More realistically, it might take three or four [ring] sessions plus a little bit of work at home. But it would be much better if you can really make sure that that one part of your game is absolutely perfect before you try and start moving on because the last thing we'd want to do is start to get two or three different moves down the line and then realize that actually your grip wasn't right in the first place.

So, let's use the analogy of running before you can walk. Make sure you've absolutely got your priorities in the right order first, use the help of a PJ qualified professional for that if you need, then start by working on the first one until you're really comfortable with that and that change isn't going to move away and you're not going to go back to your old bad habits as soon as you start thinking about change number two. So, let's get that grip really, really perfect, we're happy with that, we can hit a hundred balls not thinking about the grip too much, now you're ready to take on change number two.

The same with change number two before you get to change number there. That way, the change process might take a little bit longer but you won't be going back over old ground and you won't have to restart again and ultimately you will get better quicker. It's also ideal if you do those changes at the time of year when you're not going to play a lot of golf. So maybe pick out the winter time and say, "This is where I'm going to start to improve my golf the most." That's what the best players in the world are doing and that's what I think you should do as well.
