What To Do When Your Laid Off, Top Of Swing Help (Video) - by Pete Styles

So now if you look at the position at the top of the backswing which we term as a laid off position, now getting in the golf club laid off can cause a number of problems on the downswing, one of which could be a shank. So if you feel like you are shanking the golf ball, you need to really get somebody to video your swing to firstly check if you are laid off on the backswing. So laid off by nature means that the golf club would point in the side of the target lines. So it would point this side of target line, left of target for the right-handed golfer. Ideally the club should point down the target line at the flag I am aiming at rather than been laid off over in this position.

A laid off position is often caused by the club coming away from the golf ball incorrectly rather than coming back, pointing down the target line as it should do, a laid off position is often a two flat a backswing, too flat a takeaway, to flat a backswing and then the club just points laid off at the top. The left wrist not in the right position, from a laid off position, the club will come down very much inside the line of the golf ball as well and then throw itself out towards the ball often resulting in a hustle contact. So a little exercise that you could use to try and take a little back on the correct path, would be to take a head cover and just place it behind the golf ball. Good distance away from the golf ball and just a little bit inside the line. And then just feel like you wanted to take the golf club out beyond the head cover and don’t let the golf club come in and immediately whip around your body this way work on the use and make a nice one piece shoulder motion, one piece takeaway, point out at the camera, focus on the top and back down in front of you and not get in the golf club inside the line to a laid off top position, to an inside position which could results in some shanks.

So the best thing now is get somebody to video your swing, so you won’t be able to necessarily see whether you are laid off or not. Get someone to video it, check that position out and use that exercise if you feel like you are too flatting your takeaway and two laid off at the top of your backswing.
