Johnny Miller was one of the best golfers in the world when he was at his peak during the 1970’s wining a couple of major championships and a lots of tournament victories alongside. He’s now probably almost more famous for being a lead golf commentator in the US. Now Johnny Miller had a – interesting actually in many ways, and one which isn’t easy to repeat, but he did have a couple of key fundamentals that enabled him to strike the ball very, very powerfully indeed. Now what Johnny Miller did during the backswing, was straighten the right leg, put a lot of flex into the left knee and then tilt over towards the target.
Now most people when they get into this position reverse on the downswing, move the weight back to the right hand side and then scooping the ball off up into the distance. What Johnny Miller did very successfully was straighten the right leg, left knee flex and then tilt but then keep the weight forwards through impact. And what that enabled him to do was strike down on the ball very, very hard with the irons when the ball was further back in the stance and really compressed and crushed the ball when hitting a driver. It’s not an easy move to make because a lot of people when they get into this position will end up just striking so hard down on the ball they will either hit a big fat shot or send the ball out very, very low.
But if you can get your timing correct it’s a fantastic way to strike down on the ball very, very powerful. So left knee flexed, right knee straighten, weight over to the left and then maintain the weight forwards through the actual strike. And if you can get it right the ball comes off so, so crispy. Not an easy move to replicate but if you fancy giving it a go, then look at Johnny Miller’s swing and practice, and hopefully it could pay off.
