How can I hit a high wedge shot? Now the first thing you need to get correct is your club selection, if you have a high lofting wedge such as a sand wedge that will obviously lift the ball higher than your pitching wedge. So if you do want to hit it higher select the club to match. If you want a high shot select a higher lofted wedge. Now apart from that you can actually use a correct setup and then a very basic technique to actually lift the ball up into the air quite easily and quite quickly as well. With the set up we want to be taking a slightly narrower stance, we want the feet and the hips to be slightly open because that presets an impact positing but we want the ball position to be bang in the middle any further back than that will be a too steep of a descending blow and it’ll send the ball out very, very low.

So you want the ball position to be in the middle of the stance, you want a slight amount of weight forward and the hands to just be slightly forward of the ball as well. From that position you will have a slightly descending blow but it’ll be enough to produce back spin to lift the ball up and it won’t be at the back of the stance striking down which will de-loft the club and send the ball out very, very low. So to a higher lofted wedge shot, the feet and the hips slightly open, the weight slightly forward on the front for about 60% and then the hands just ahead of the ball. And from here you can have a nice flowing swing striking down and through and the ball will lift up with a nice bit of back spin and it’ll stop very, very quickly. Like I said what you don’t want to be doing is getting the ball from the back of the stance leaning forward and putting the hands ahead because that will de-loft the club and it will send the ball out very, very low. So make sure your club selection is correct, make sure you’re set up is correct, especially the ball position we then have a nice free flowing swing striking down, creating a bit of back spin and getting the ball to stop nice and quickly after having a lovely high flight.
